LP SmartSide, Raw Wood, or Vinyl: Choosing the Right Shed Siding in New England

There are three real choices when it comes to shed siding in New England — and most people only know about two of them. Raw wood and vinyl get most of the attention, but the material our customers choose most often is LP SmartSide T1-11: an engineered wood panel that delivers the look and flexibility of wood with maintenance requirements close to vinyl. It costs less than vinyl upfront and dramatically less to maintain than raw wood over time.

New England's Climate: What Your Shed Siding Has to Handle

Whatever material you choose, it needs to survive:

  • Freeze-thaw cycles: Temperatures can swing 40–50 degrees in a single day in March. Moisture that gets into siding gaps expands when it freezes, widening those gaps season after season.
  • Heavy snow loads and ice dams: Well-built sheds handle these; the siding needs to seal out water at every seam, especially where the roof meets the walls.
  • Humid summers: High humidity from June through August creates conditions where untreated or poorly finished wood absorbs moisture — leading to warping, swelling, and eventually rot.
  • Salt air (coastal areas): Properties near the ocean — coastal Rhode Island, Cape Cod, the South Shore, the North Shore — get salt-laden air year-round. Salt accelerates surface degradation and is particularly hard on painted wood.

All three materials can handle these conditions. How much effort they require from you along the way is what separates them.

LP SmartSide T1-11: The Smart Choice on Most Fronts

LP SmartSide is what we use on the majority of our sheds — not because it's the most expensive option or the most marketed one, but because it genuinely solves the problems that make raw wood frustrating without giving up what makes wood appealing.

What It Is

LP SmartSide T1-11 is an engineered wood panel product manufactured by LP Building Solutions. Unlike raw wood, it's made from wood strands bonded with resin binders and treated with zinc borate — a preservative that resists fungal decay and insects. The T1-11 profile means the panels have vertical grooves that give sheds a traditional board-and-batten look. The SmartFinish overlay is a factory-applied primer coating that seals the surface and gives paint something consistent to bond to.

The result is a panel that looks like wood, accepts paint like wood, and behaves much better than raw wood in a wet, freeze-thaw climate.

Why It Holds Up Better Than Raw Wood

Raw wood's vulnerability is its porosity. Paint and stain protect it, but no finish is permanent — especially in New England, where UV exposure, moisture cycling, and temperature swings wear finishes faster than in gentler climates. Once paint starts to crack, water gets in, and once water gets in, the clock starts on rot, swelling, and eventual failure at the seams.

LP SmartSide starts with a better base. The engineered substrate doesn't have the knots, voids, or grain inconsistencies of raw wood — the places where raw wood fails first. The resin binders resist moisture absorption throughout the panel, not just at the surface. And because the SmartFinish overlay is applied at the factory under controlled conditions, it bonds more uniformly than site-applied primer on raw wood.

The practical result: touch-up painting every several years instead of full repaints every 5–10. Longer intervals, less money, less hassle.

The Aesthetic Advantage Over Vinyl

Vinyl's limitation is that it comes in manufacturer colors and profiles, and that's what you get. You can't paint it. If you want to match your house, you're choosing from a palette and hoping for a close match.

With LP SmartSide, you paint it — any color, any sheen, custom mixed to match your house trim exactly. If you repaint your house five years from now and want the shed to match, you paint the shed to match. That flexibility matters for homeowners with traditional New England homes, specific architectural character, or just a strong preference about how their backyard looks.

When LP SmartSide Is the Right Choice

  • You want low maintenance without giving up color flexibility
  • Your budget favors a lower upfront cost than vinyl
  • You want the shed to match your house precisely
  • You want a traditional wood-grain look
  • You're inland, or in a moderately coastal area (not right on the water)
  • You want the most popular, proven option in the New England market

Raw Wood: When Natural Beauty Wins

Raw wood — typically cedar or pine siding — is the choice when the natural look is non-negotiable. There's no engineered substitute for genuine wood grain, and for homeowners with historic properties, working farms, or a strong preference for natural materials, it's worth the maintenance trade-off.

The honest version: raw wood requires real upkeep. A quality cedar shed, painted and sealed at installation and maintained on a regular schedule, will last 30–40 years. A raw wood shed that gets ignored — paint peeling, seams open, moisture getting in — will deteriorate significantly faster in New England's climate than LP SmartSide or vinyl would.

When Raw Wood Is the Right Choice

  • The natural wood look is a priority and not negotiable
  • You're committed to a regular maintenance schedule
  • Your property has a historic, agricultural, or traditional character
  • You want maximum repairability using standard materials
  • You're comfortable with the long-term cost of periodic refinishing

Vinyl: Maximum Low-Maintenance Performance

Vinyl is the zero-maintenance option — full stop. No painting. No staining. No annual treatment. Wash it with a garden hose and it looks the same decade after decade. It doesn't rot, carpenter bees can't drill into it, and salt air has no effect on it.

The trade-offs are real. Vinyl costs more upfront than either LP SmartSide or raw wood. You can't paint it. And in coastal areas it becomes the clear winner — but inland, where LP SmartSide closes the maintenance gap significantly, many customers find the extra cost hard to justify.

When Vinyl Is the Right Choice

  • You want the absolute lowest maintenance commitment
  • You're in a coastal location with significant salt air exposure
  • You're comfortable with manufacturer color options
  • You don't anticipate needing to modify the shed's exterior
  • Long-term cost of ownership is more important than upfront price

How to Choose

Start with location:
Right on the coast or within a mile or two of salt water → vinyl is the strongest long-term choice. Salt air is genuinely hard on painted surfaces.

Then consider maintenance honestly:
If you know you'll keep up with it → LP SmartSide gives you the most flexibility at the best price.
If you know you won't → vinyl's zero-maintenance advantage compounds over the years.

Then consider aesthetics:
Need to match your home exactly, or want a natural wood look → LP SmartSide or raw wood.
Happy to choose from a manufacturer's color palette → vinyl works.

Budget:
LP SmartSide is the most cost-effective choice upfront. Raw wood is mid-range. Vinyl costs more upfront but less over 20 years if you're comparing against raw wood maintenance costs.
